WHAT IS YOUR MONUMENT?

At a recent large gathering of BPNN friends I recounted the story of a tourist in London who marveled at the statues honoring historical figures. He asked his guide to see the memorial to the great architect, Christopher Wren, who designed many important buildings, including St. Paul’s Cathedral. The guide replied, “If you seek his monument, look about you.” Wren’s son inscribed that response in Latin on Wren’s crypt in St. Paul’s, where you can see it to this day.

Each of us builds a monument with our lives. Someday, we will be gone. What legacy will live on about us in our family, friends, and community? Each day, with each act of kindness, courage, and caring we build our monument. Will we be remembered for what we consumed, for fortunes we amassed, or for what we gave of ourselves to the world? 

BPNN thrives through the work of gentle souls in service to others. Each of you in your own way help to build a finer world. You are truly building a monument to what humanity can be when you devote yourself to a noble cause and spend your energy in the joyful struggle to alleviate suffering. 

In the coming year, BPNN will initiate a legacy program called Caring Doesn’t End, encouraging friends to remember BPNN in their estate plans. Marcia and I have already planned for an estate gift to BPNN.
